What is a tincture?

A tincture is a herbal extraction using alcohol as the menstruum. In other words, we are using alcohol to pull out certain compounds in plants for our consumption.

Why use a tincture?

Tinctures often have a high alcohol content and therefore don’t always make the most friendly way to consume herbs. For example, your finished tincture in this kit will have a finished alcohol content of around 50% – the other 50% water. Placing this directly in your mouth can result in burning, unpleasant feelings!

Even with this downside, tincture can be a very effective way of using herbs. Most of the time I will place a dosage of tincture into a small cup of water and drink.  By doing this, you avoid tasting the tincture too much.

Alcohol is not only really good at extracting certain plant compounds, but it preserves them almost indefinitely. A finished tincture with an appropriate alcohol content will last for years in proper storage – a cool, dark place.
